I was searching eBay only for Apple versions of cards listed as MP 1,1 compatible. This card I hand-carried back to NZ, was sold specifically as Apple version = "Apple ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB DDR3 SDRAM PCI Express x16".

I was trying hard to avoid buying a PC graphics card.

My card that failed was the BTO ATI HD3870 (hypothesis is it failed - buying a new card was cheapest way to isolate between card and motherboard).

So as long as you have some other disk drives, a flash drive, room to create a partition on another drive, you should be okay.īut, I would not upgrade onto your SL boot drive, even if it was rock solid, that will be your safety net, you can have safe backup system, just in case Lion and its lack of Rosetta impedes your transition to Lion, and a clean start will go smoother and better, and not bring along old out of date incompatible apps programs or utilities. You can use any Mac under the same Apple ID to download. When you do download Lion given that only 2013 nMP and some of your other Macs do have the EFI firmware to support those features, you should first made a copy of Lion installer package. SL of course does not have Recovery partitions and it does not have Internet Recovery Mode to refresh or reinstall. You should be and have already some clones - choose option to have every file copied do a checksum to help insure integrity. Sometimes I need a cane? so am I good to go for a run? :-)

> given that sometimes the Mac Pro boots and runs fine: is that consistent with corruption on the HDD? System model name: MacPro1,1 (Mac-F4208DC8)

One boot worked in Safe Mode but not on the next 2 tries. I tried various Lion bootable disks and startup keys for a couple of hours. Neither would the source of the clone - the drive that I had been successfully booting. That new semi-clean boot drive would not startup. Next on the MacPro I inserted a security-erased drive, then SuperDuper cloned the working boot drive system and the admin-user. Below are the first few lines through the non-Apple kext. After forcing shutdown and reboot I see a kernel panic log. I ran Geekbench OK and Stress Test for 15min OK then left the MP powered overnight. Things were looking up so I started working on wiping a drive to package with the MP for sale.

Following my last update I succeeded to get the Mac Pro to boot in Safe Mode. Update: This case is getting more confusing and complex.
